Weight lifting may not burn as many calories as a cardio workout, but is a lot more effective at building muscle. Strength training essentially breaks down your muscles, meaning that throughout the recovery process (post-workout) your body continues to burn a sufficient amount of calories, including fat!!  It is the perfect exercise to increase your resting metabolism (calories burnt while resting).
